Holiday to Milan-Climbing Duomo

On our third and final day in Milan, we started with another fantastic breakfast in our hotel before catching the train into the city centre.

After admiring Duomo di Milano (Milan Cathedral) from outside for the past two days, it was time to go inside!

When visiting Duomo you must book tickets in advance, as we still had to queue in several different lines to get in, even with pre-booked tickets. If you buy on the day, be prepared to queue for at least an extra hour or more.

Once inside Duomo I was instantly amazed at the sheer size and scale of everything, like the huge marble columns.

And the full sized statue of the saint Madonnina, the symbol of Milan.

On one of Duomo’s spires there’s a full sized, gold statue of Maddonina, so this is a replica inside the church.

Duomo di Milano is by far the largest cathedral I’ve visited and you could easily get lost wandering around inside. It’s an amazing piece of architecture and definitely worth visiting, as well as admiring from the outside.

Once we’d finished exploring the inside of Duomo, we headed back outside to queue up for the roof terraces.

From the terraces you can see the upper part of Duomo and its statues and also take in views of the city.

After seeing all that Duomo had to offer, we headed to McDonald’s for lunch.

We tried spicy cheesy chips (good) and a veggie burger that tasted like boiled vegetables covered in batter (not so good).

Then back to exploring!

There was a church that I wanted to visit, but initially we ended up in the wrong one. I still don’t know the name of this one, but it was interesting!

And then we found what we was looking for. Inside San Bernardino alle Ossa church, there’s a side room that you pay a small fee to go inside.

Inside that room/chapel is skulls and other bones. The local cemetary ran out of space in the 13th century, so skeletons were dug up and moved into this room and most newer bodies were buried in the graveyard. The San Bernardino church was later built next to the bone room.

After San Bernardino, we shopped and explored the city centre some more, before returning to our hotel to relax and freshen up.

For dinner we ate at Cin Cin, which was close to our hotel. My partner enjoyed his spaghetti bolognese but I wasn’t wowed by my cheese and spinach ravioli.

So I ate at another casual place on our street.

And then it was time to go back to our hotel and pack, ready to head to Lake Como.
