Holiday to Milan-Climbing Duomo

On our third and final day in Milan, we started with another fantastic breakfast in our hotel before catching the train into the city centre.

My outfit for the day.

After admiring Duomo di Milano (Milan Cathedral) from outside for the past two days, it was time to go inside!

When visiting Duomo you must book tickets in advance, as we still had to queue in several different lines to get in, even with pre-booked tickets. If you buy on the day, be prepared to queue for at least an extra hour or more.

Once inside Duomo I was instantly amazed at the sheer size and scale of everything, like the huge marble columns.

The beautiful stained glass windows.

And the full sized statue of the saint Madonnina, the symbol of Milan.

On one of Duomo’s spires there’s a full sized, gold statue of Maddonina, so this is a replica inside the church.

You can see the original gold statue, lit up at night below.

Duomo di Milano is by far the largest cathedral I’ve visited and you could easily get lost wandering around inside. It’s an amazing piece of architecture and definitely worth visiting, as well as admiring from the outside.

Once we’d finished exploring the inside of Duomo, we headed back outside to queue up for the roof terraces.

From the terraces you can see the upper part of Duomo and its statues and also take in views of the city.

After seeing all that Duomo had to offer, we headed to McDonald’s for lunch.

We tried spicy cheesy chips (good) and a veggie burger that tasted like boiled vegetables covered in batter (not so good).

Then back to exploring!

There was a church that I wanted to visit, but initially we ended up in the wrong one. I still don’t know the name of this one, but it was interesting!

And then we found what we was looking for. Inside San Bernardino alle Ossa church, there’s a side room that you pay a small fee to go inside.

Inside that room/chapel is skulls and other bones. The local cemetary ran out of space in the 13th century, so skeletons were dug up and moved into this room and most newer bodies were buried in the graveyard. The San Bernardino church was later built next to the bone room.

The creepiest statue of the Virgin Mary.

After San Bernardino, we shopped and explored the city centre some more, before returning to our hotel to relax and freshen up.

For dinner we ate at Cin Cin, which was close to our hotel. My partner enjoyed his spaghetti bolognese but I wasn’t wowed by my cheese and spinach ravioli.

So I ate at another casual place on our street.

And then it was time to go back to our hotel and pack, ready to head to Lake Como.

  1. Ooh we didn’t do the skull church! That looks so interesting! One thing we liked about the doumo was the ceiling, not sure if you noticed as we wouldn’t have done if the guidebook hadn’t pointed it out but it was all painted to look like stonework!
That McDonald’s burger does not sound appetizing, but I wish we had cheesy chips here!

    1. There was a few unusual churches we wanted to visit, but we didn’t get to do them all. This one was really cool to see. I didn’t know that!😊 No, not a nice burger. The chips were good though! I do wish we got more variations in our McDonald’s here, the menu rarely changes does it?! Xx

  2. Wow, Duomo di Milano is incredible and so massive! 😮 Well worth the wait!
Veggie burgers are so hit and miss! I sometimes opt for them even though I’m not vegetarian – I just like the taste – and some of them are horrid!
Oh yikes on all those skulls! We’ve come across something like that in our travels – it’s not viewed as morbid.

    1. It is definitely worth the visit. My partner sat down in Duomo as I walked round to take some more pictures and he couldn’t find me😂 That’s how big it is inside. I agree, there are so many gross veggie burgers. The McDonald’s here does a nice one with chilli sauce thankfully. It’s not! A lot of places in Europe use skulls as decorations in the churches etc. I didn’t find the skulls too weird, just that creepy statue! X

    1. Aaw thank you. They are the cutest little shoes😊 It’s beautiful inside. So many lovely stained glass windows. They are real! They was dug up from a nearby cemetary as it had run out of space and stored in the ‘bone room’. Xx
