Just after Valentine’s Day, me and my partner went away for four nights to Iceland.
We started our day with a McDonald’s breakfast, before driving to the airport.
Our flight was with Icelandair and the plane not only had a good amount of legroom, but a TV too. It’s the first time I’ve seen one on a budget flight and it definitely made the three hour journey fly-by.
The obligatory plane selfie.
Once we arrived at Keflavik airport in Iceland, we walked outside to get onto the Flybus. Usually when we go away we book a taxi to take us to our hotel, but the Flybus was a better value option.
An hour later we arrived at the Icelandair Reykjavik Marina Hotel, where we was staying.
I instantly knew I’d love the hotel as it had lots of quirky art installations, it’s own cafe and sitting areas that had a cosy hygge feeling.
The cinema room.
Our bedroom.
As the hotel’s next to the Harbour and fishing area, there was shells and other sea themed touches in our room.
The bathroom.
All of the toiletries in the bathroom were L’Occitane, which I loved!
Once we’d unpacked, we discussed our plans for the evening and impulsively decided to do something different.
For our first night we’d planned to explore Reykjavik and the Harbour area, but when we checked into the hotel we heard the receptionist telling people the sky was clear for the Northern Lights.
The view from our bedroom window was a beautiful pink sky, so me and my partner phoned the company we’d booked the Northern Lights tour with and managed to get a space on the tour that night. It was a bit of a risk, but we knew the forecast for the rest of our stay wasn’t good.
The beautiful sky upon our arrival.
As we didn’t have long before the tour, we headed across the road to eat at Hamborgarabullan burger bar.
Hamborgarabullan is a small and quirky place, that’s popular with tourists and locals alike. Most people pulled up on the bar area with their food and I loved the atmosphere.
Me and my partner got a burger each and shared a huge basket of fries, which we really enjoyed. Despite only offering a few burger options, Hamborgarabullan does a veggie burger which is why we went.
Bellies full, we headed back to our hotel ready to be picked up.
The coach drove us an hour away, as we headed to a quiet area of countryside not far from the airport. As there was no light pollution the skies were clear and we could make out every star.
We waited for twenty minutes and then the sky started to light up.
We watched the lights move across the sky for nearly an hour, before climbing back on to the coach.
Then just as we was pulling away, the driver told everyone the lights were back out.
We stood under perfectly clear skies, surrounded by stars and the Northern Lights, thankful for a perfect first night in Iceland.
Ah I wish I could look half as good as you do when you travel via airplane!!!! I’ve been to excited to read about your Iceland trip. I love how the cafe had that street sign installation- for some reason I love those things….I’ve seen them at like weddings or parks and I always find them so cool. I can’t even imagine how amazing those northern lights mustve been in person. I’m fascinated just seeing them in your photos. Cannot wait to read more!!!

such a beautiful sharing of photos and light! I loved the soft light around the accommodation and the room was so lovely, really cosy feel. and you got to see some spectacular shows in the sky! I could feel how much you loved this little getaway. That pink sky took my breath away, I don’t get those here, it was like a start to a fairy tale.

Aaw thank you☺ The whole hotel was so cosy, I sometimes forgot I was in a hotel. It felt like home. I really loved it. It had such a calm and beautiful feel in Iceland, I fell in love with it. I love pink skies and sunsets. We get more red skies where I live but not loads in London. Xx

Flybus! We took it as well – they have such a great public transit system for a small place (in terms of number of people).
So incredible that you experienced the Northern Lights (the gamble you took paid off!) and captured it so well. I have heard that it’s a challenge to capture it on camera (exposure settings and whatnot). I have yet to see the Northern Lights so vividly. I once saw a bit of it while camping in the northern part of our province – very faint, nothing like your neon green mirage! ❤

They do! Every trip we took we ended up on a Reykjavik Excursions Flybus haha. It did pay off. I knew the forecast wasn’t good the other nights as there was meant to be cloud cover and funnily enough the tours were cancelled every night. So if we hadn’t moved it to our first night, we wouldn’t have seen them!☺ Real luck there.
It was hard to capture. We bought a new camera and learnt how to do the correct settings but none properly captured the Northern Lights or stars. I fiddled around with the settings and managed to get some photos, so I’m happy😊 xx

You’re so lucky that you got to see the lights, lots of people go to Iceland but don’t see them due to bad weather (us included! Although we did see the most beautiful starry night skies I’ve ever seen). I’d like to go back at some point; hopefully better luck next time 🙂
Great pics! x
